Tsunami Sedimentology and Its Role in Hazard Awareness, Preparedness, Assessment and Mitigation

The NSF Division of Earth Sciences sponsored a workshop entitled “Tsunami Sedimentology and its Role in Hazard Awareness, Preparedness, Assessment and Mitigation” from Friday, December 2nd to Sunday, December 4th in San Francisco's Larkspur Hotel.

The workshop brought together researchers studying tsunamis from various perspectives, from physical sciences and engineering, to social sciences and community support. Participants had the common goals of developing priorities for interdisciplinary research on tsunami sedimentology and applying that research to tsunami hazard awareness, preparation, assessment, and mitigation.

Outcomes of the workshop include recommendations to the NSF for tsunami research that would best help coastal communities at risk, and recommendations for extensive cross-disciplinary collaboration.
